Veterinary Technician Positions

The description of three levels of technical skills is provided below. 

      Primary duties:

Patient care
  Supervision of back office staff, including kennel staff and vet assistants
  Oversight of Laboratory
  Self Starter
  Effective in multi-tasking (this eleminates most veterinarians!)
  Independent thinker
  Team player

   Level 1:
            1. Dog and Cat restraint
            2.  Administration of vaccines
            3.  S/Q fluid therapy
            4.  Take and record patient's history from client
            5.  Measure and record a patient's temperature, pulse, and respiration
            6.  Patient surgical preparation
            7.  Basic anesthetic monitoring
            8.  Suture and drain removals
            9.  Cat and dog nail trims
           10.  Cat and dog baths
           11.  X-ray processing
           12.  Fecal analysis      
   Level 2:
            1.  IV Catheter placement
            2.  IV and S/Q Fluid Therapy
            3.  IM injections
            4.  Venipuncture  (specifically cephalic and jugular blood draws)
            5.  x-RAY positioning/exposure/processing of thorax, abdomen, extremities,axial                      skeleton, and pelvis (including contrast media)
            6.  Dental prophylaxis
            7.  Assisting EKG
            8.  Recognize and respond t emergencies (e.g. respiratory distres, profuse bleeding,                      trauma, shock, burn, seizures) and stabilize patient with veterinary supervision
            9.  PCV/TP
           10.  Gram and diff quick stains
           11.  Urinalysis (stick, sediment, specific gravity)
           12.  FELV and FIV tests
           13.  HWT's
           14.  Animal Nutrition
           15.  Client Education (e.g. routine hospital procedures and patient home care)
           16.  Assisting with euthenasias
           17.  Extubation of cats and dogs
  Level 3:
             1.)  Reading and preparing manual CBC's
             2.)  Collecting urine via cystocentasis
             3.)  Placing urinary catheters
             4.)  Calculating/  reconsituting drug and drip dosages
             5.)  Stomach tubing
             6.)  Blood Transfusions
             7.)  Gowning and gloving for surgery
             8.)  Anesthetic instrumentation/ induction RVT only/ monitoring (including                                 intubation)
             9.)  Dental extractions/subgingival flap (RVT only)
            10.)  Suturing (RVT only)
            11.)  Application/ maintenance of splints and casts (RVT only)


Description of our lead technician.

 
As such, this team member assumes a leadership role in our treatment area and determines the order of procedures, oversees veterinary and kennel assistants,  peforms or oversees the in house laboratory procedures, collects blood and urine samples, processes in house CBC's, urinalysis, chemistry panels, in hospital microbiology, clinic viral screens, and heartworm tests.  This individual also oversees our radiology procedures, places iv catheters, monitors fluid therapy, induces anesthesia and monitors patients during and after anesthetic procedures.  Our hospital has ultrasound equipment and our technicians are granted access to our ultrasound equipment for screening patients, especially with respect to cystocentesis.
       In addition to the technical and patient duties of this position, the head technician interacts with pharmaceutical representatives and maintains our hospital's inventory of over the counter products, medical supplies, prescription diets, and maintenance diets.
      Our core staff of receptionists and technicians provide a key role in our veterinary care and client interactions.  We are seeking a person who looks upon their work as their passion and professional calling. Dr. Palmatier is the continuing education coordinator for our local associaton and would like to have a team member who is passionate about veterinary education in order to coordinate programs for our veterinary community.
     This position is a four day fulltime position in which work days are 9.5 to 10 hours long. Other aspects of this position are continuing education funding, vacation programs, health insurance, and potential for adjustable weekly work schedules.  Salary is intended to be competitive and recognize the individual's knowledge, ability, and contribution to our hospital's success
